I have had so much fun sharing my life with each and every one of you. I appreciate you taking time out of your day to listen to me :) Each new day brings us new adventures. Once again, my path is changing and I have learned to listen to myself and trust myself on my journey.
I have decided to change the look and feel of my website as I am energized by health coaching and truly want to expand my business. I am in the process of creating a new website and blog that will premier on March 1. With this new website comes new beginnings for me as a health coach and as a Reiki practitioner. I am so excited to be on this journey and want to continue sharing with you.
I invite you to explore my new website once it is launched. My goal is to reach out to others across the world and help them achieve their health and wellness goals. Please help spread the word and experience working with a health coach yourself. I also invite you to experience Reiki with me as I learn to become a practitioner. It is an amazing healing journey!
I look forward to crossing paths with you in my new environment. Be well!

life force energy
As I have been going through my healing journey, I have felt as though I am on the right path, but that I was still not feeling complete. I was feeling like I was not balanced and that I was trying to force something that was not there for me. I have had to make some decisions that have not been that easy. Once I made them though and followed through on them, I felt lighter and happier. I have found that if I listen to my body and the universe, that I feel like I am me. I feel like I am finally on the path that I need to be.
My resolution this year is to take things off my plate that do not need to be there. This means being a little bit more selfish as I am choosing to do what fulfills me and makes me happy. It is powerful! I finally feel clear and free. My body is healing and I can understand what I need so much better because I am not clouding it with what I think I should do to make others happy. I am making me happy.
Here are some of the fun and exciting things I have planned for myself and you this year! I hope you choose to come along.
1. I am going to surround myself with positive people. Of course there are things, days and people who will not be positive, but I now know how to interact with people and go through the situations so they no longer make me feel bad.
2. In fact, by choosing to do this, I have found that I am creating wonderful connections with other alternative healing practitioners and regular joes all around :) I am excited to see who I meet next!
3. I am jumping head first into health coaching. This is an amazingly uplifting career for me. I am energized by being able to provide support and guidance to others. The beautiful part is that I can offer this to people while they remain in the comfort of their own home or on a lunch break at work.
4. I am going to become a Reiki practitioner and learn from an amazing person! I am so lucky to have met her and have her be the one to teach me. I cannot wait to share that with you all!
5. With this exciting stuff going on, I have decided to revamp my website and blog. Please be patient with me as I do this. This transformation is important for me as I move forward. I will keep you up to date on what is going on.
I hope that each and everyone of you is well. I invite you to continue on this journey with me and would love to be your support.
One thing you can do is to start by reflecting on what is happening in your life. Are you feeling balanced? Do you need to make some changes to get on the right path for you? If so, what are those changes and how are you going to do it?
Take care & be well!

staying healthy
Winter time is always my most dreaded time of the year. While I love the holidays and playing in the snow, it means it is the time for sickness to go around. I am not an advocate for the flu shot, so my family and I take precautions in other, natural ways to keep us healthy. I want to share those with you to hopefully help you through this season!
- Wash your hands! This is so simple to do. It is the friction of washing your hands that removes the germs. So sing yourself "Happy Birthday" or "A,B,Cs" 2 times through to make sure you are washing long enough.
- If your ears are hurting, take a couple of ounces of olive oil and throw in a fresh garlic clove. Heat this baby up for 20 seconds in the microwave. Let it cool just a bit to warm. Using a dropper (best) or a Qtip (be gentle and careful!) drop or place the oil into your ears. You can keep it in there with cotton. Gently massage the outside of your ears and from under your earlobe down the side of your neck. Do this a few times a day and the pain will go away! Never save the garlic oil for later. Always make fresh. Garlic is an antioxidant with anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. If you try this, it will decrease the inflammation and pain even if you do not have an infection.
- Drink warm fluids. The best is to warm up some water and put lemon and/or honey in it. If you like tea, try some lemon or ginger tea. These have anti-bacterial/anti-viral properties that are great for fighting off bad germs.
- If you find that you have a sore throat, gargle a few times a day with salt water. Salt draws the moisture out of the area where bacteria likes to set up shop. It is also useful for drawing the moisture out of swollen tissue so the inflammation goes down.
- For a cough, take a teaspoon of honey or a honey stick! Honey is an anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. Just be sure not to give this to children under the age of 1.
- Neti pot- this is the rinsing of your sinuses with salt water. Be sure to use a pre-made packet or make your own! Mix 1/8 to 1/4 tsp of non-iodized salt into 8 oz of warm filtered or distilled water. Do this a couple of times a day to prevent bacteria from staying in there and growing.
- Good old chicken soup or broth also has some anti-bacterial properties that will help you feel better sooner.
- Get plenty of rest! You need 7-9 hours a night to stay healthy, so if you are feeling rundown, increase your sleeping time.
- Drink lots of water. Keep your body hydrated so it can keep fighting against the yucky germs out there!
- Take a good quality vitamin C supplement. This will give your body needed nutrients to fight against bacteria.
- Take a good quality probiotic to keep your digestive system running well. By adding more good flora to your gut, you improve your chances of remaining illness free.
Be well!

not so gentle reminders
Today I am grateful for so many things. I know that part of living a fulfilled and balanced life is taking time to reflect on what we are thankful for. I try to do that, but there are times when certain experiences wave a big flag in my face to be grateful for what I have.
This weekend was filled with joy and sadness. Once again I found myself on the receiving end of a phone call that my dad was in the hospital with heart issues. This is not the first time I have received this call. In fact, I have lost count of the number of calls like this I have received. In those moments, I am filled with fear and sadness. Once I acknowledge those emotions, I move on to reflection of my relationship with my dad and find myself so thankful for the time that I have had to spend with him. When I am finally able to talk with him, I am filled with relief, love and gratefulness that my dad is going to be here one more day with me.
This emotion and situation was entwined with the happiness and celebration of my son's birthday. His birthdays always make me reflect on the trials I had in bringing him into this world safely. Seeing the amazing little boy that he is turning into, allowing myself to experience life through his eyes and emotions, and seeing the joy of him playing with his friends and celebrating his day, brings so much joy and happiness to me that my eyes fill with tears of joy and my heart swells with love.
Both of these experiences bring so much vivid emotion to me. At times I feel like I am riding a roller coaster. At times I wish I could get off, but when I ride through the good and bad times I find myself able to reflect and make my list of what I am grateful for. I also find that I have learned so much. I take the positive pieces to incorporate into my life, and I learn from the negative pieces. I am reminded how important my family and friends are to me. I am reminded that I need to eat healthy foods, be active and cherish every moment I have as life can be short and it is so precious. It reminds me of the journey I am on to experience life and find balance. I have learned the importance of being mindful.
I ask you to take a moment and reflect on your life and what is happening now. Whether it is good or bad, there is a lesson to be discovered. It is your choice of what you do with that learning, but I encourage you to let yourself go with the flow and find your way to living a fulfilled and mindful life.

making my life a priority
With new years come new resolutions. I kept hearing about making un-resolutions this year instead as they might be easier to keep. I think that it is important to make some kind of resolution or better yet - a goal so that one has something to focus on for the year to improve their health and well-being.
This year my goal is to not fill my plate with so much. As I reflected over last year and even years before, I discovered that I was causing myself undue stress with the choices I was making. My personality tends to be one of if I decide to do something then lets do it all now. I way overextend myself and find that I am irritable, frustrated and moody. Therefore, the first week of January, I decided to take the time to prioritize what I would like to accomplish, and I made myself take things off of my plate. Here are a few steps that I took that are helping and that can help you too!
1. I wrote down everything that I was currently doing and what I wanted to add for the year.
2. I read through my list and asked myself what was most important to me and why
3. The things that I decided were not a priority at this time, I removed from my list or put them in the "parking lot" for later. If the items I took off my list involved others, I had to discuss my decision with those people. I am one who has a hard time not helping others, not doing everything, and asking for help, so some of these were difficult conversations.
4. I asked for love and support from people who are close to me and able to help me move towards accomplishing the things I want to and to help me have patience to wait to do the others things.
5. I wrote down my timeline. This helps give me focus of what I am doing now. I have to learn to focus and live in the present and not worry so much about the future. I was missing out on the experience of the now.
These 5 steps may not seem like a lot, but a resolution or goal does not have to be complicated. In fact, it shouldn't be or it is too hard to accomplish. I also took a week to be thoughtful in my decisions. I did not do this overnight. In fact, I am sure I will tweak it as the year goes on. The most wonderful thing is that since I have done this, doors are opening with opportunities to do the things I love. I have met wonderfully amazing people and can feel the love and support from them. I have also found energy and enjoyment that I haven't had in a very long time. So take some time, organize your life and discover how beautiful you and life are!

A new beginning......
Happy new year to everyone! I hope everyone's holiday season was happy and healthy. This time of year is my favorite as we get to spend and make time to focus on our friends and family. The new year reminds me to take a moment to share my gratitude and love for everyone, which makes me feel incredibly happy. It is also the time for me to reflect on my year and determine what I need to work on and to think about where I am at physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It is also the time for me to identify how I want to move forward.
I continue to heal everyday, and that feels WONDERFUL! I am also able to see clients now as a health coach. That is an AMAZING feeling! I can finally work with people like you and help you find your health and well-being in the new year! You can learn more about my programs on my website at www.befreetohealhc.com
Along with these changes, I am going to change up my blog too! I am going to be more consistent on posting in my blog and use this as a place to provide you a resource on alternative healing options, exciting health and wellness information, and to give you inspiration to identify and achieve your goals!
I hope you decide to join me on this journey. This will be an exciting and life-changing year for all of us. So hold onto your hat (or yoga mat) and let's get ready to heal!

Gratitude
This is the time of year where we think about what we are thankful for. Gratitude can be a very powerful action. Even if you take a few minutes each day or once a year to reflect on the things, people, experiences, opportunities, and more that you are thankful for, you will discover the power of gratitude. It can ground you, lift your self-esteem and confidence, warm your core with love, and help you to see how beautiful and amazing life is. With this being Thanksgiving week, I thought I would take a moment and share with you my list of gratitude.
- I am thankful for my family and the support and love they offer me each day as I go through life's journey.
- I am thankful for my home to keep me warm and safe.
- I am thankful for my friends that provide me with joy, comfort, support, and a place to let my feelings be set free.
- I am thankful for my new friends who have amazing spirits and warmth. I am grateful for their kindness, support, and compassion.
- I am thankful for myself and my courage to face each day with new strength and to continue to move forward in my healing journey.
- I am thankful for my son and the precious gifts he provides me - learning and experiencing life through a child's eyes.
- I am thankful for my husband and the clarity and encouragement he gives me every day.
- I am thankful that I am able to provide for my family.
- I am thankful that I am able to use my skills to help support and encourage others like being able to share my story with all of you.
- I am thankful that I am me.
Please take a few minutes now and write your list of gratitude. It can be something that you share or something that you tuck away in a safe place and pull out to read on those tough days. It is quite freeing and empowering to do this.
Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!

Childish ways
After reading and thinking about the Four Agreements, I want to continue discussing our authentic self. I think the Four Agreements is one vital way to help me on my journey to being my authentic self.
I have been thinking about one of the sections that I wrote about. In finding your true self, I think it is important to reflect back on your childhood. I want each of you to take a moment and think about what you wanted to be when you were a child. Why did you dream of becoming that person? What made it seem like fun? It may seem silly, but by pondering these questions it is a way to help you discover an amazing amount of precious wisdom about who you are.
I recently did this and after 15 years of my professional life, I was dumb-founded by what it revealed. It was like this secret me has been sitting right in front of my face the whole time, but I chose to look around her and be the person I was expected to be. Maybe that is why I have felt so unsettled for so long professionally.
When I think back to my childhood, I have fond memories of playing teacher. I would get all of my stuffed animals and put them around my bed. I would make up lessons to teach them and grade their papers. I would read them stories and play at recess. It brings a smile to my face. My other memory that pops up is that I truly enjoyed playing with my Legos and watching Scooby-Doo. When I think about what I liked about the Legos, it was creating and building the town, the cars, the homes, the post office and more. Scooby-Doo and the gang were awesome at finding the clues and solving mysteries. The other childhood memory I have is wanting to stay inside at recess and helping the librarian. This was a way for me to explore the books and be taken on an adventure to some other place or time or to learn something new.
This provides such a wonderful look into who I am. I love to teach, learn and create. Scooby-Doo - I love the mystery and the challenge of figuring things out. So when I look back over my professional life, I realize that in every position I held, I enjoyed the creation and development of programs and the ability to teach others and learn from them. I always found a way to bring these aspects into my job. Once that piece was no longer an option, I found that I was bored and would look for something else. Wow - only 15 years and a little guidance to figure that one out!
I am having a blast learning about nutrition, wellness, coaching and creating and building my business! I cannot wait to reach out and teach others about ways to feel healthy and happy and live their life as they want to. I am so excited to start this new beginning. Are you ready to find you? It is exciting and I promise you, if you follow your dreams, they will come true. The essence of you will come out and you will be able to move ahead. Good luck!

Do your best!
Do your best - the fourth agreement from Miguel Ruiz. How many times have we heard this from our parents? Just do your best. Millions, I'm sure. I know I say it to my son all of the time.
In order to do your best, you have to enjoy what you are doing. You can look at it as a chore, but what fun is that? When we see things as a chore or work, then we are telling our self to just get it done - quick. There is definitely a difference between quick and your best. I always tell my son that it is more important to do it well (his best) than to do it quick. Your best feels good.
Miguel teaches us that when we do our best we learn to accept our self. If we make mistakes, but we still did our best, then we can learn from those mistakes. Be aware of what happened in the mistake and next time do your best again. Everyone needs to practice and then we can be aware and keep learning. Everyone's best is different and your best will change because each person is unique and as we practice our best changes.
The great thing about doing your best, is that it makes you feel good and happy. When you know that you are doing your best, you find pleasure in what you are doing and you know that you are living as you. You can only be you when you do your best.
Sounds simple, huh? Our society is so fast paced that we just need to get it done. We are losing the pleasure in accomplishing things, creating things, growing things. By being present in them moment and taking pleasure in doing our best, we can enjoy life. It may slow us a little bit, but with practice, we can become more efficient and provide a better product (accomplishment, goal, dream, etc).
Doing my best. I know that I am doing my best as a mom, a student, a coach, a wife, a nurse, a friend, a daughter, a sister and much more. If ever there is a time when I am sad or angry, I am taking a moment to reflect on the situation and emotion. I ask myself if I did my best. If not, then I seek understanding so I learn and know the next time I will do my best. No one is perfect. Doing my best is my daily goal because I know that it will make me happy.

assumptions - can we live without them?
Don't make assumptions. You know what happens when you assume :) Miguel Ruiz shares with us his third agreement - Don't make assumptions. Miguel teaches us that if we only live by one agreement, this should be it. This agreement can transform your life. If we are able to not make assumptions, then our communication with others will vastly improve. If we have better communication, we will have less drama, sadness and misunderstandings. Wouldn't that be nice? With this agreement, we seek clarity. If someone is talking to us and we don't understand, we should not make an assumption of what they are saying. We need to ask questions until we are sure of the meaning. Who has time for that in this busy society? Everyone needs to make time. Think of the time we spend on negative thoughts and actions. These could be avoided by simply clarifying the situation.
I would like to share with you an excerpt from his book. I will paraphrase and no ill intentions of plagiarism are present. The words he wrote just speak to me and I want to share them with you. We live in a society where we fear what others think of us. We are are worried about fitting in instead of being our authentic self. We make assumptions that everyone sees life the way we do. Others think the way we think, feel the way we feel, judge the way we judge and abuse the way we abuse.... We blame ourselves. So before anyone has a chance to reject us, we reject ourselves. By rejecting ourselves and assuming stuff about ourselves (maybe someone said you look fat or made a hurtful statement and then we believed these words), we cause a lot of inner conflict. We question our self and start to believe what other say about us good or bad. Instead of assuming that we know it all for everyone else and believing what others say about us, we need to stand up for ourselves, turn off the outside noise, and find our true self. We need to believe in our self. To trust our self.
By giving, sharing, loving and being true, we open our world up to living our dream and feeling joy and happiness. How wonderful would each day be if everyone did this for themselves? We would be on a road to freedom.
As I continue to work towards healing and living my life as me, I have to look at the assumptions I am making. I assume that food with hurt me. I assume that others will think I am weird. I assume that people will laugh at me. I assume that others will not understand. This is a short list of my assumptions. By recognizing these for what they are - assumptions- I can start to work on the truth and believing the truth. Food will heal me. Food will make me healthy. I am not weird and who cares if they think I am. If people laugh at me, I will join in so that we are laughing together and find the humor because that can help heal me too. If I am impeccable with my word and share the truth with others, they will understand. After all, who really wants to ass*u*me? Not me. I just want to be free.
What assumptions are you making?
We would be on a road to freedom.

it's not personal
Don't take anything personally. This is the second agreement that Miguel Ruiz teaches us. This is a crucial lesson to help you free yourself. It is also difficult. Miguel speaks about how taking things personally causes a poison to run through us. This poisons our soul, our mind, and our well-being. Humans are selfish, and therefore we think that everything is about me. By thinking this, we are letting the poison run our lives. This poison can be destroyed by not taking things personally. The lesson is that people do and say things because of themselves. Perhaps they are feeling poorly about their life and to help them feel better they share some negative words with you. This may make them feel better, but if we let that poison in, then we start to questions ourselves, our thoughts, our person, and our spirit. This can lead to conflicts within ourselves and with others.
By not taking things personally, we are able to trust ourselves and live our dream of love and joy. It takes the fear out being you and living your life. This is because you don't allow yourself to be hurt by others. It doesn't mean that you don't care about others or things in life. It just means that you believe in yourself, trust in yourself, and are able to live as yourself.
I have found this to be quite helpful in my interactions with my son. While he is still quite young, he can say very hurtful things or act out in very hurtful ways. By reminding myself of the second agreement, I am able to listen to him and interact with him knowing that he is hurting for some reason - maybe he did not get the toy he wanted or he has to go to bed. His actions and words are just his expression of anger or disappointment. His words of how mean I am or that he hates me are no longer taken personally by me. I know that he loves me, and that I am a good mom. I know that soon he will return to his more joyful state and he knows that I love him.
This agreement has helped me to learn to look at people and interactions differently. I am able to process that it is not me - most of the time :) - and I am able to work through difficult situations a little easier. It has done wonders for my stress level.
Ready to feel better and see the world from a different perspective? Try living this second agreement and let me know how it feels.

impeccable word
The Four Agreements......Be impeccable with your word. This is the first agreement that Miguel Ruiz teaches us about. He writes about how this is saying what you mean. To be aware that your word is so powerful that you can create amazing things or destroy things in the blink of an eye. We should live our lives in truth and share our words with others to create, learn, teach, inspire and be true to ourselves and everyone we come in contact with. This helps create love in the world not hate. Hate can be created if our words are used for evil. In my space, it is for love. There will not be any hurtful, destructive words shared. We are not able to be free to heal if we are not impeccable with our word.
What does this mean to me? If am able to be impeccable with my word, it gives me the power to be true and enjoy life. It offers me the opportunity to free myself of negativity and offers me freedom. Freedom to run with my dreams and leave fear behind. By leaving fear behind, I am able to transform myself and live the life I want to live.
As I struggle with my fear of food and letting that fear grip me so tightly that I cannot take a step outside of the box fear has built for me, the possibility of something like speaking with integrity being able to give me the power to live my life in a joyous and loving manner is awe inspiring. I turn my impeccable word towards myself and say that the truth is that food will heal me.
The truth is that there are going to be ups and downs in finding out what food my body sees as harmful and as healthy.
This truth to myself will bring me comfort and the power to take a step outside the box of fear. It may be a small step or two, but it is still a step towards healing and living my life the way I dream of living it.
My journey will be long, and I am ok with that because I know that the first step, the small step starts with my impeccable word and can only direct me in the right direction to healing, love and joy.
Can you make this agreement? Are you ready to live your dream and take the first step with your impeccable word? Please share your thoughts.

The Four Agreements
I love to read and learn. I read on every topic that I am interested in finding an answer to. As I have been on this journey, I have tried many things and read even more to try and learn how to heal myself. I just read The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz. This book is life changing for me, and I want to share its wonderful power with you.
If you have read this book before, I encourage you to read it again. If you have not read it, please take the time to. I read it in a couple of hours while sitting out on my deck in the beautiful sun.
The premise is that there are four agreements that people should live by and by living these, you will find yourself living a happy and fulfilled life. Can a book really inspire that much of a life changing transformation in someone? I think so. I took the time to really ponder his words and to understand how those words are reflected in my life and how I can live by them. It was amazing.
I have been on this long journey and the words that he shares really spoke to me. These words have made me choose to fight this fear inside of me and live my authentic self. I am ready to stand up to my fear and find my path to happiness.
Over the next few weeks I will share with you an agreement and my thoughts. I want to share with you what is transforming inside of me and where I end up. I hope that you too will take the time to read this book, think about the agreements and make the choice to live by them. I invite you to share your thoughts with me and the other readers. Together, we will be set free.
Happy reading!

raindrops are melting me......
Join me in the journey to heal your inner self.....
Imagine yourself lying on a massage table, lighting is dim, there is a glow of soft light and the sound of soothing spa music. Your journey begins with the inhalation of wonderful smelling oils and you can feel the energy wrapping itself around you. Slow, deep breath in and exhale out. Do this a few times. Let yourself go with each breath. Feel the soothing hands massage your neck and shoulders and inhale the wonderful oils. Let your mind go.
As the tension in your neck and shoulders melt away, next are your feet. Oils are chosen especially for you and applied to the hands of your therapist. Touch is constant while applying and massaging. You will find a different technique is used to apply the oils and work them into your skin. Again, you will feel energy start vibrating through your body from your toes on up.
When the feet are done, you will flip over and the oils are applied and massaged into your back. There is massage, feathering and raindrops on your back. I am going to step aside for a moment and share an experience I had. Now, I am one who enjoys a good massage and feels relaxed while getting one and afterwards. With the Raindrop Technique, I am taken to a whole new level of relaxation and inner healing. I am not able to form a thought. My mind is blank. I also have fallen asleep which is not something I have ever done in a massage.
So while lying on your tummy, you will feel drops of oil dripping onto your back and the massage technique is heaven. Once you're completely relaxed, you turn onto your back again and the technique winds down with neck, shoulders, head. You can feel the energy just pulsating through you. I feel like I am floating and in a state of pure calmness like I have never experienced before.
I am then left to rest and come back to reality. When I feel ready, I can redress and head out of the magical room. This is always hard, and I tend to do this faster than I probably should, but I cannot stay because I know I would never want to leave.
The first time I had this done, I was told that she could tell I carried my stress in my neck and between my shoulders blades without ever touching me. After the session, the only area that gave me issue was between my shoulder blades. It itched SO bad. Come to find out that is your body detoxing itself and it is good.
I could write on the feelings and sensations and how much I love this for days. I encourage everyone to try it. Each person will experience something different depending on your needs, issues and the oils used. I don't know why I am always amazed at how healing natural products can be, but I still am.
As I write this, I want to thank my wonderful therapist Reba. She has opened my eyes to many wonderful things, Raindrop is so amazing and so is she. Thank you :)

Raindrops do what?
I am sure that most of you out there enjoy having a massage. The feeling of tense muscles and stress just melting away with each stroke. I love the feeling of relaxation that washes over me while getting a massage. I never thought there could be anything better than that, but I was wrong. There is something that feels better physically, emotionally, and mentally. It is the Raindrop Technique. Gary Young owner and developer of Young Living Essential Oils adapted this amazing technique and use of his essential oils.
So what is the Raindrop Technique? According to Gary Young, it encompasses a method of using Vita Flex, reflexology, and massage techniques and blends these with aromatherapy. These methods are done while essential oils chosen for your needs are applied to different areas on your body like your neck, shoulders, feet, back. This technique is designed to bring balance to your spine, muscles and energy and promote healing from within. It can help with boosting your immune system, GI issues, respiratory issues, stress relief and more. The application of the essential oils combined with the massage, reflexology and Vita Flex techniques create an amazing experience that is unique for everyone.
So how does it work? Raindrop Technique affects you at a cellular level. The pure, essential oils work at this cellular level to help support your organs and body’s structure. Overall, it helps to detoxify and balance the body. Here is a link to help better explain what Raindrop Technique is:
http://www.youngliving.us/pdfs/PIP_RaindropTechnique.pdf
This is powerful stuff, so be prepared for emotional, physical and mental release. Also, if you have high blood pressure, asthma, or are pregnant or nursing, you will want to skip this because it is so powerful.
I got to experience this amazing technique, and I am hooked. I invite you to get a glimpse into my experience as I share this with you next week in my blog. Until then, let yourself be free to heal.

Anuloma Viloma
Some of you are probably wondering what anuloma viloma is. This is part of my meditation and breathing story. This technique is alternate nostril breathing. Doesn't sound quite as exciting as anuloma viloma does it? I wanted to share this with you because this is the simple breathing technique that I learned and is helping to change my anger and irritability into calm and understanding.
Take a few minutes with me and find your path to inner calm. Find a comfortable place to sit. Take your time to be comfortable and to breathe through this. As you close your eyes, listen. Be aware of the sounds around you. Acknowledge them and move on to the next one until you feel aware.
With your eyes closed, place your index and middle fingers in between your eye brows.
Take a deep breath in. Before you let your breathe out, place your thumb over your right nostril to block the air from coming out. Breathe out slowly through your left nostril. Keep your thumb there.
Then, when ready, breathe in through your left nostril slowly. After this breath in, use your ring finger to close your left nostril and remove your thumb from your right nostril.
Breathe out slowly through your right nostril. When ready, breathe in slowly through your right nostril.
When ready, switch back to the left being open and the right nostril closed.
Continue this for 12-30 complete rounds. This is about 5-10 minutes of slow breathing.
That's it! Simple right? By doing this once or even twice a day, you are balancing your left and right hemispheres of your brain. This means that you are bringing calm and clarity to your mind which in turn will provide you with better mental clarity, concentration and perception. You will also find that your emotions are more positive and understanding.
Be calm and enjoy your day!

meditation
Meditation is an easy and effective way to transform yourself and your life into something positive. Some of you may be questioning the importance of this, but trust me, you will want to read on and learn more about it. Especially if you feel anything like I have been feeling.
I have been struggling with feeling irritable and quick to anger. I was looking for something natural and in addition to food that is quick but powerful and will help me through my day. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a meet up group that was focusing on meditation, yoga and breathing. I learned so much about breathing and meditation in so little time.
Why is breathing good? I ask that in addition to what we already know. Breathing is vital for us to live. We breathe in the air that fills our lungs and feeds our cells. We breathe out the carbon dioxide and the impurities of our body. But breath is so much more.
Breathing is part of meditation and there are many benefits to practicing this. It doesn't mean that you have to sit quietly for hours on end to achieve inner peace. It can fit quite easily into your day.

- Meditation helps your mind balance and stop the business inside your head. It gives you the opportunity to become calm, focus on yourself and your surroundings and ultimately transform your mind and emotions. It makes you aware of you. The true you, which can be scary for some. If you take the time to look inside, the scariness goes away and it is replaced with calm, understanding, and comfort.
- In addition to helping to calm the mind, meditation can help you focus. Your mind becomes clearer and you can concentrate. Who couldn't use better ability to focus on what we are doing in a day. Our lives are so fast-paced that we miss so much. This helps us slow it down and actually see and enjoy our environments.
- The other benefit of meditation and breathing is that is is excellent for our bodies. The benefits include the ability to better cope with stress, lower our blood pressure, decrease our negative thoughts and emotions even tough ones like anger and fear, and may even help decrease our vulnerablility to heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Research is going on in these areas.
I found that simple breathing/meditation techniques can transform how I feel. I discovered a way to make me feeling calmer and more understanding towards others. That is only in a week's time. I can't wait to see what happens as I continue this. I will share my meditation techniques with you as we go on and as I learn more.
Be well!

finding the answers
So what do you do with all this stuff that you wrote down in your food journal? Here is the fun part - getting to your aha moment!
The first step is to read and reflect on what you have written down. If you see a trend over the days and weeks that when you eat dairy, your tummy feels queasy, you have major gas, or whatever - think to yourself - maybe I should crowd dairy out of my diet.
Next, it is important to trial different things - take one food out of your diet for a couple of weeks and then try it again. Do you get the same results as you did before? If so, you may be intolerant to it. If not, yeah! Keep eating it and try a different food and see what happens.
Take note - if you have taken a food or foods out of your diet, be sure to add one food back in at a time AND be sure to only try adding in a food every 3-4 days. You need to let your body have time to respond. That response won't necessarily happen overnight. In my case, it happened in 6-8 hours. I knew by then that my body does not like dairy or gluten. Talk about a long night of not so fun stuff. Ugh!
This is not the fastest way to determine how food effects you, but it is the truest test you can do. Be patient and the answers will come. It is a step towards creating a healthier, happier you.
If you want to take a test and have a sense of what may be ailing you and perhaps find a starting point of what foods to try removing form your diet, I would recommend you get an allergy test done. Beware though, there are a lot of false positives that come up. Skin tests can just be an irritation to your skin - not that you are really allergic to it.
You could also have a serum test done. This type of test can give you a sense of how severe the intolerance or allergy is. These are helpful guides too especially if you do the IgG and IgE testing. Not everyone agrees that these tests are accurate.
Allergy tests can be done through an allergist or a naturopathic doctor (ND), both who will help you decipher the results. Just be careful on who you talk to and remember to listen to you. Don't make the mistake I did and believe that the allergist has all of the answers. The ND will probably not be covered by insurance. The MD may be. If you prefer to do it on your own, there are also kits that you can purchase. The test on your own, is on your own. Both through the ND and on your own, the test can be around $300 a test.
The most accurate way is to listen to your body and write it down. Hell, I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday let alone how I felt 30 min, an hour or 6 hours after. I need to write things down. Take your time and trust your gut - literally. Listening to your body is the best start to a new you.
This is just information and in no way intended to be medical advice. Any testing or decisions a person makes to improve his or her health is a decision made by that person and not by me. This information is just to help educate people and not intended as medical opinion or prescription.

Let's Grow!
Today I took my son to a PBS event in Madison. It was a lot of fun to see the Cat in the Hat and Super Why! They even had Mr. Steve performing. My son's favorite part, besides having his picture taken with the Cat in the Hat, was pretending to plant, grow and eat vegetables! The Madison Children's Museum brought out a garden plot with vegetables for the kids to grow - keep in mind this is a large event so this is not real dirt and veggies :) My son donned his vegetable apron and grabbed a shovel. He dug in the dirt and planted beets, eggplants, pumpkin, lettuce, and carrots. He had fun making the grasshopper jump on his shoulder and the bee buzzing by as he harvested his food. I love that they give kids a chance to learn about food and growing it in such a fun way! It is the perfect opportunity to talk about the different veggies, how they grow, and how we should eat them. My son was having so much fun! When the event ended, we decided to continue the fun at the Children's Museum where he proceeded to pretend he lived in a hut, invited friends in to cook and harvest the the garden together. Seeing the world of healthy food and gardening through his eyes helps foster my enthusiasm for healthy, fresh food! Yum!
